RYA Day Skipper Courses

Thanks for visiting our Day Skipper  & ICC  web site. This site has been put together to give some specific information to those aspiring Day Skipper Students. All information hear refers to the RYA web site & RYA sail Log book G 15 & it is strongly recommended that you are in possession of one of these when planning your training. (Italics is view of Safeena Sailing)

The Day Skipper represents a very challenging stage of ones sailing career or development. Simply put how can one be “sailing a small boat in familiar waters by day” when you are not really familiar with any navigable water at all. In practice you will need to keep track of where you are and manage the practical skills of sailing a boat whilst ensuring the safety of all aboard and other water users around you. (This is the view of Safeena Sailing)

Pre Day skipper Pre-course experience (RYA log book) (is this enough even if its a minimum)

*It is recommended you attend the Day Skipper shorebased course beforehand

**Basic sailing ability and background, dinghy sailing, wind surfing (a good understanding of sailing manoeuvres and points of sail along with knots after all you’re considering being in charge!)

Minimum age 16

Day Skipper Shorebased. Sometimes referred to as “Theory” the navigation is the practical task of keeping track of where you are at all times. This is a very valuable course which I believe is undervalued .  We strongly recommend an evening class type delivery where there is sufficient time to think about and assimilate the information and concepts being discussed also to complete all the RYA exercises in the student work pack gaining you real ownership of the substance of the course.

Day Skipper Practical Learn to skipper a short passage with the instructor on hand to give advice and encouragement and ensure your safety. Experience being in charge, taking credit when it all  goes well and being responsible when it doesn't. The Day Skipper Course has a satisfactory course completion certificate.

ICC assessment (International Certificate of Competence) the ICC run by the RYA, is for British nationals and has been expanded to almost world wide but not EEC. The Day skipper & ICC are effectively the same or similar level, If you have an RYA Day skipper cert you can apply to  the RYA for an ICC if you don’t you can do an ICC assessment
